Hello! My name is Ruth, and I would love to help you with your English! I am a native English speaker from the United States. I have been teaching English for 5 years to people from around the world who have moved to the USA, and 3 years at a summer camp in Russia. I do have a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and I have taught all levels from beginner to advanced. More than anything I love to see and hear your progress in English. I teach grammar, reading, writing and speaking, but I probably tend to favor speaking/conversation/phonetics. There are a couple reasons for this: Firstly, when I am learning a language, speaking is always the most difficult aspect for me - in part because it has the potential to be the most embarrassing, and no one likes making mistakes. Secondly, speaking is the most difficult to master for many people because it is used less often, especially when you do not have to use English on a daily basis. It is easy to find books and movies in English to work on reading or listening, but finding someone to talk to can be much more difficult. I do my best to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where you can practice and learn and make mistakes. I love answering questions and seeing faces light up when you suddenly understand. I hope to see you in a lesson soon!

I have 30 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language. I have taught all levels; from basic to advanced grammar and conversation, as well as business English, pronunciation, TOEFL and TOEIC prep. I have taught overseas in the Peace Corps and in the States at language schools, the World Bank, continuing education programs and refugee programs. I especially enjoy helping you on the more difficult aspects of English grammar to improve your ability to speak and write more precisely. And I love teaching pronunciation. I always design my lessons specifically for you, based on your skill level and your goals. I believe that language learning is a lifelong process of discovery. As you learn the language, you learn the culture, and vice versa. My role as a teacher is to provide the 'rules' and guidelines, give you opportunities to practice what you are learning, provide suggestions for improvement and continuous feedback on your progress. Here is what one of my students says about me: "Martha helped us to get a deeper understanding of English language, expand considerably our vocabulary, strengthen our conversation skills, and also develop a more complex and correct grammar. After living in many foreign countries where she had close contact with their diverse cultures and languages, she is able to adjust her mind and teaching to the needs of international learners."

My passion and life's work is teaching. I received my license to teach Spanish and English as a Second Language in 2014. Since then, I have been a Spanish teacher and just recently started a position as a Bilingual teacher. Additionally, I am working on a Master's in Bilingual Education. I have worked with a diverse group of students in my school to provide support in English and Spanish. Additionally, I have been a tutor to adult English learners at the Literacy Network in Madison, Wisconsin. I absolutely loved the experience of working one-on-one with a student, as I was able to provide a very personalized and effective lesson. I have loved the experience of using Verbling to practice my conversational Spanish. I wish to work on the opposite end, and provide this teaching experience to English learners. Due to my own journey of learning Spanish, I possess great empathy for my students, and an intuition for their learning needs. I understand and utilize effective skills for teaching language. These skills include: targeted, yet balanced correction of errors, gently pushing a student towards more complex uses of language, and consistently asking for feedback and output of language. Ultimately, I want to provide my students with the chance to develop their language skills in a non-threatening, but challenging and efficient environment. My style of teaching is inspired by real world contexts. Targeted grammar lessons are helpful and necessary. However, my students need to use language in authentic situations, such as retelling a story, asking for help, analyzing a current event, or conducting an interview. I desire fluency and confidence for my students as they grow in their abilities.

Hi. My name is Martin. I'm British and come from the south of England but I was educated in Manchester, in the north of England. You might have heard of Manchester but you may not know much about it. Aside from being the home of two world class football teams, the city is an historical hub of innovation, science and progress. The old Victorian saying, "What Manchester thinks today, the world does tomorrow." still applies today to some extent. Google 'graphene', if you're interested. I hope our classes can reflect that spirit. I aim to push your English beyond the boundaries of what you think is possible. I have lived and worked abroad: Firstly, as a property salesman in Germany and then later as an English teacher at a secondary school in Austria. I have also spent quite a long time in Japan in addition to having visited many more countries including: the USA, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain, France, Belgium, Egypt, Belarus, The Czech Republic, Malta and the Republic of Ireland. I have been teaching English online for more than 7 years to many students from all walks of life and from all over the world. Some have wanted to improve their General English and conversation, some have needed to pass an exam such as IELTS and some have required pronunciation training and/or to brush up on their Business English. Whatever your needs, I would love to help you with your English. I am a graduate of the University of Manchester, where I studied Modern Languages and Business Management (specialising in German as my main foreign language). I hold a Cambridge CELTA and am therefore qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language. Additionally, I graduated with a PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status in the summer of 2018, which qualifies me to teach in British secondary schools (high schools). I look forward to meeting you very soon!

Nice to meet you and welcome to Verbling! My name is Marty, and I am an English teacher from the United States. As a teacher and learner of many languages, I want to show you how to enjoy your studies and make meaningful progress toward your goals. I want you to have fun in your lessons, and learn something new every time. *HOW TO PLAN FOR SUCCESS* THE GOLDEN RULE: YOU are the key to your success! The more effort you invest in your studies, the faster you will reach your goals. 1. Before our first lesson, think about what you want from an English class. Do you want discussion only? Do you want grammar practice? Imagine your ideal class and tell me what it is like! 2. Think about your immediate goals. Everyone's long-term goal is to become fluent in English. Tell me about your short-term goals, as well! Do you have an exam soon? Are you traveling or moving to an English-speaking country? 3. Think about your lesson plan. Do you want a lesson plan with weekly goals and homework? Do you want me to create the lesson plan? Would you like to create a lesson plan for me to follow? 4. Prepare a list of topics that interest you. Do you love music and want to discuss different genres and instruments? Let me know, and we can plan discussions that inspire and motivate you! 5. As your teacher, my mission is to help you achieve your English language goals. Your courses will be more successful if you tell me your interests, goals, and preferences for class. *** Student Guidelines: 1. Class Booking and Cancellation a. You can book a class or cancel a class up to 12 hours before class time. b. You can cancel one class per month up to 15 minutes after class begins, and you will be refunded 100% of the class fee. You must send me a message on Verbling so I can cancel the class for you. Verbling will not refund you if you cancel the class yourself. c. If you cancel the second or more classes with less than 12 hours notice, you will be refunded 50% of the class fee. 2. Technology Problems a. If you have a problem with your computer or internet connection, please send me a message as soon as possible. You can reschedule your lesson or cancel with 100% refund of the class fee. b. If the class is interrupted less than 30 minutes into class due to technical problems, you will receive a 100% refund of the class fee. c. If the class is interrupted more than 30 minutes into class due to technical problems, you will receive a 50% refund of the class fee.
