Family Literacy Coordinator and Instructor
World Relief Chicago - Chicago, IL U.S.A.
In the USA, I worked at a refugee and immigrant resettlement agency that provided English classes to many levels of English Language Learners from all over the world. I ran the Family Literacy Department. A main responsibility of my job was to assist parents to become English speaking resources for their children that were also learning English in my program. I helped the parents learn conversational English especially in regards to navigating parenting in an English speaking country. For example parents learned crucial English vocabulary about how to take public transportation, how to buy things at a store, vocabulary needed when visiting a library, how to speak to their children's English speaking teachers, and much more. I also taught English to children ages 2-5. I taught my students English using a variety of literature, songs, stories skits, crafts, and experiential learning. My students ranged in English levels, some knew no English at all when they started my class, while others were close to fluent. I was able to adapt my lessons to suit each of their English needs. My students were from many different countries all around the world.
