À propos de moi

I taught Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina. I also have experience teaching English as a foreign language and business writing at Musashino University in Japan.

I have taught in diverse classrooms, and as a person of color who came to a four-year college (and then graduate school) through the community college system, I am passionate and dedicated to fostering a student-centered learning environment based on openness, respect, and collaboration. I am committed to helping students identify and develop their own passions while becoming successful, confident readers and writers. I like to turn attention to non-traditional texts and to writers from diverse backgrounds drawing in students who may identify with them and challenging everyone to take in to account different experiences and perspectives. I agree whole-heartedly with the philosophy that all students should be taught to think critically, communicate powerfully, analyze other perspectives, and solve complex problems. Being able to analyze other perspectives has been what has allowed me to thrive in academia and in living overseas. My experience, my teaching philosophy and my body of work support my mission to transform lives by providing outstanding learning opportunities and empowering all students to achieve their educational goals.

I am from Oakland, CA, and have spent the last two years living and studying in Ireland. My work focuses heavily on my background–being part Native American, part Irish. I want my writing to add cultural depth to, and to create a solid basis for understanding, our global connections, and human interactions–and to place geographically specific writing within a universal context. And as an educator, I want students to find their true voice and to understand fundamentally how to make themselves be heard clearly, creatively, and confidently, through their writing.

With my experience, I am well equipped to teach introductory and advanced language learning and writing courses.
