6 ways to describe people and their interests in the Serbian language

These sentence structures can be used in the Serbian language when you want to describe people or talk about their interests, activities, hobbies, etc. Here are examples of how to describe people in third-person - to talk about him or her.

1. Physical appearance, character traits and feelings: Use a verb 'to be' and adjectives.

On je visok / nizak / pametan / uspešan / veseo / zadovoljan / poseban...
Ona je visoka/ niska/ pametna / uspešna / vesela / zadovoljna / posebna...

2. Sentences with the verb 'imati'. This is very similar to the English verb 'to have' and it can be used in various contexts.
On ima dobar posao.
On ima pravog prijatelja.
Ona ima veliko srce.
Ona ima sreće.
On ima crnu kosu.

3. For clothes and accessories we usually use the verb 'nositi' (to wear).

On nosi bele patike / farmerke / sat na ruci / sportsku jaknu...
Ona nosi skupu ogrlicu / crvenu haljinu / novi kaput...

4. When can talk about someone's favorite things.
favorite = omiljen

Njegovo omiljeno piće je koka-kola.
Njen omiljen sport je plivanje.
Ovo je njihov omiljeni restoran.

5. A very simple way to describe what someone likes using the verb 'voleti' (it can mean to like or to love, depending on context). You also need another verb or sometimes noun to specify the meaning.

On voli da pliva.
On voli da spava dugo.
Ona voli da izlazi sa prijateljima.
Ona voli da vozi motor.
On voli košarku.
On voli koka-kolu.

Instead of verb 'voleti' you can use the verb 'obožavati' when you really like something.
On obožava da vozi motor.
Ona obožava sladoled.

6. A more advanced way is to start a sentence with 'Njega zanima...' which means 'He is interested in...'
In the Serbian language the noun 'zanimanje' means 'a profession', 'a paid occupation', but we use this verb to express all kinds of interests.

Njega zanima košarka. or Zanima ga košarka.
Nju zanima tradicionalna kuhinja. or Zanima je tradicionalna kuhinja.
Njega zanimaju fudbalske utakmice. or Zanimaju ga fudbalske utakmice.
Nju zanimaju putovanja. or Zanimaju je putovanja.

Hi, my name is Zorica and I was born and raised in Serbia. Teaching is my profession, but also my great source of joy. I am a lecturer - Master of Serbian language. You can become a fluent speaker with me if you have a desire to learn the Serbian language or you feel close to Serbian culture and people. I have three years of teaching experience. When it comes to my teaching style I like to be focused on conversational skills, that's my priority, but I also think that it's important to have a well-structured lesson and homework. Basically, I want to show you Serbian culture and make you feel the beauty of communicating in my native language. I can teach children or adults. So, if you have any questions, please, contact me or book a trial here on Verbling. I am excited to help you!
